PLUMAS NATIONAL FOREST

If you're interested in getting a broader view of Plumas County as a whole, and enjoy a beautiful drive with changing scenery and points of interest both natural and man-made, then a trip down one of the area's scenic byways is the thing for you!

Plumas County is home to the Feather River Scenic Byway, which begins at the junction of Route 70 and Route 99 to the east of the county line and cuts through to the west, ending just before the Nevada border, where 70 meets US 395. This route is notable not only for its showcase of varying environments and scenery, but also for the historical points of interest along the way.

Lassen Scenic Byway is another route, through Lassen Volcanic National Park, which boasts many jaw-dropping vistas and opportunities for camping and day hikes. The byway, which passes many of the volcanic features of the park, can be driven in one day or extended into a longer trip with time taken for hikes and exploration.

A Real Scenic Beauty

The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway has one of its endpoints at Lake Almanor, where it offers a loop around the scenic lake before heading north through Lassen Volcanic National Park and eventually on to Oregon's Crater Lake, with stops at other volcanic sites along the way. Whether you're taking on the full 500-mile trip, or just the Plumas County portion, be sure to make time for the Lake Almanor loop and views of Mount Lassen.

Finally, Plumas County's "Scenic Byway Link", the section of Hwy 89 which connects the Feather River Scenic Byway and the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, is a shorter drive that meanders through the Indian Valley. It's a beautiful scenic drive, especially in fall when the leaves have changed, and travels through several small historic communities as well.
